There’s something magical about stepping back into the studio after some time away. The lights, the camera, the creative energy, the excitement of watching an idea come to life. It all feels so familiar, yet this time, something was different.
This was my first creative day back from maternity leave. And now, I’m a mom.
For the past few months, my world has revolved around tiny fingers, newborn snuggles, feeding schedules, and getting to know this beautiful little human who has completely changed my life.
Photography has been such a big part of who I am, but motherhood has introduced me to a whole new side of myself.
So when the opportunity came to collaborate with the talented makeup artist Diana on a Halloween-inspired creative session, I was excited to get back to doing something I love.
But I also had mixed emotions.
The bittersweet feeling of thinking about leaving baby at home for future sessions to come. I was excited to be back in my element, but there was also that little tug at my heart.
It’s a strange feeling, wanting to be in two places at once. Wanting to spend every possible moment with your baby while also missing the things that made you you before motherhood.
And I think that’s something many moms can relate to.
I love being a mom. I also love being a photographer. I’m discovering that those two things don’t have to compete, even if finding the balance takes a little time.
If there was ever a perfect excuse to get back into the studio, it was Halloween!
I’ve always loved the opportunity to step outside the ordinary and create something imaginative. Halloween gives us that freedom to be a little more theatrical, experimental, and playful.
For this session, Diana and I leaned into a dramatic black-and-white aesthetic with a whimsical, slightly haunting twist.
Think bold stripes, harlequin patterns, a playful top hat, elaborate makeup, and a touch of dark circus inspiration.
Diana’s artistry brought so much character to the look, and I had fun experimenting with lighting and shadows to complement it.
One of my favorite elements was the geometric light pattern projected onto the backdrop. It added depth and drama without needing an elaborate set.
Sometimes, a simple backdrop, interesting lighting, and the right creative collaboration are all you need to make something special.
And that’s exactly what I love about studio photography.
As the session went on, I could feel myself slipping back into that familiar creative rhythm.
Adjusting lights. Looking for interesting angles. Making andjustments and watching the entire mood of an image transform.
It felt good. Really good.
Not because I needed a break from being a mom, but because I was reconnecting with another part of myself that I love.
Before motherhood, a creative session was simply a chance to experiment, collaborate, and make beautiful images.
Now, it also represents something more: learning how to make space for my passions while embracing this new chapter of life.
I’m sure there will be days when leaving home feels easier and others when all I want is to stay wrapped up in baby cuddles.
But this Halloween creative day reminded me that it’s okay to make room for both.
I can love this new season of motherhood wholeheartedly and still feel excited about getting behind the camera.
I’m still the same creative person, just with a whole new perspective and a very special little girl waiting for me when I get home.
A huge thank-you to Diana for sharing this creative day with me and helping make my first session back a fun one.
Here’s to more creative adventures, more beautiful collaborations, and figuring out this new rhythm one day at a time.
And now, enjoy a little Halloween magic from the studio!
